Legacy Migration Solutions has a number
of migration paths that have provided clients with database
reengineering solutions since the late 1980s. Our
significant experience has provided expertise to include
IDMS, IMS, and VSAM reengineering solutions to our repertoire
allowing your application to evolve to a modern computing
environment.
It all starts with design
Many years of successful migration have
taught us among other things that in order to maintain
the flow and performance of the initial application, care
must be taken in the design stage to emulate the initial
system functionality as identically as possible. In the
case of the each database manager, it is important to
emulate the behind the scene functionality within the
application code, taking advantage of as many of the new
Database Manager characteristics as possible.
Flawless execution is paramount
Our experience in database reengineering
is invaluable. Our tools automate the process;
our people insure its success.
You need a plan
While every database is unique, the steps
to reengineer to a SQL Database Manager are an exact science.
First we must learn about your
legacy IDMS database. Our tools build a knowledge base
by extracting information from IDMS database subschema
reports. The information extracted provides the knowledge
necessary for the migration tools to duplicate, with 100%
accuracy, the functionality of each IDMS statement with
the appropriate SQL statements and to generate the Data
Definition Language (DDL) for the SQL Database Manager
database.
Second the IDMS records and sets
are unloaded in a specific format so they can easily be
loaded into the new SQL tables.
Third the toolset automatically
generates the DDL statements necessary to create a SQL
table for every IDMS record and the proper SQL indexes
to support db key, sort key, and owner/member record access.
Table names are created via a customer defined or standard
naming algorithm. Column names are generated based on
the field names in the Record Description Listing.
Fourth the SQL Database Manager
database is loaded via load programs generated by the
migration toolset.
Fifth the migration toolset is
used to convert IDMS data access statements to SQL statements.
Automation results in consistent, very readable programs
that exactly duplicate the functionality of the original
IDMS programs.
The Final step in this highly
automated process is testing, cutover and implementation.
Why are we successful?
Legacy Migration Solutions process is
proven through are many success stories. Migration of
databases and applications as anyone who has been through
the process can attest, is challenging, labor intensive
work that requires innovation and flexibility. Automating
as much of the process as possible allows for iterative
problem solving as well as consistency of output, with
resulting benefits of project speed and well documented,
highly maintainable resulting source code.
